Why your Meta lead quality drops without warning, and what Event Match Quality scores actually tell a painting or roofing contractor
You were getting leads. Then you weren't. The ads were still running, the budget was still spending, and nobody at the agency mentioned anything changed. That pattern is more common than most contractors realize, and the mechanism behind it is something most agencies never bother to explain.
Meta's ad delivery system runs on signals. Every time someone fills out your lead form, books a call, or loads your landing page, Meta records that event and tries to match it back to a real person in its system. The better that match, the better the algorithm understands who your actual customers are. Weaken the match, and Meta starts showing your ads to the wrong people. Lead volume might hold steady for a few days or a few weeks, but lead quality falls off quietly while the dashboard still looks fine.
What the Event Match Quality score is actually measuring
Event Match Quality (EMQ) is a score Meta assigns to each conversion event your campaign is tracking. It measures how accurately the data your pixel or Conversions API is sending can be matched to a real Meta user. It runs on a scale from zero to ten. A score above six is functional. Below four, and Meta's algorithm is operating on guesswork.
The score is built from identifiers: email address, phone number, first name, last name, zip code, city, state, browser data. The more of those identifiers your tracking setup passes back to Meta when a conversion happens, the higher the score. An Instant Form on Meta's own platform typically captures email and phone, but strips out browser-level data because the form never leaves Meta's environment. A landing page with a properly configured pixel can pass back more identifiers, but only if the pixel is firing correctly and the Conversions API is set up to supplement it.
Most contractors are never shown this score. It lives in the Events Manager section of Meta Ads Manager, not in the main campaign dashboard. An agency can run your account for three months without ever opening that tab.
Why the drop happens without warning
The EMQ score doesn't send you a notification when it degrades. Nothing in the standard campaign view changes color or flags the problem. Your cost-per-lead metric might even stay flat or improve in the short term, because Meta keeps spending your budget and the form fills keep coming. What changes is who those form fills are coming from.
When the match quality degrades, Meta's algorithm loses confidence in who converted. It starts broadening delivery to compensate, pulling in people who superficially resemble your past leads but haven't shown the same buying signals. A painting contractor in Toronto might start getting form fills from people in adjacent cities who searched for something vaguely related, or from a demographic that Meta's system associated with a low-confidence conversion event. The leads come in, they don't pick up, and you assume the channel is failing when the actual failure is in the tracking layer feeding the algorithm.
There's a second failure mode specific to Instant Forms. Instant Forms are fast to fill out, which sounds like an advantage. But the friction-free format is also why they attract lower-intent responses. Someone scrolling at 11pm taps a pre-filled form and submits it without making a real decision. The event gets logged, Meta treats it as a successful conversion, and the algorithm optimizes toward more people who behave the same way. The leads existed. The infrastructure around them failed. EMQ degradation operates the same way, the leads exist, but the signal feeding the algorithm has already started pointing in the wrong direction.
What the score tells you that the dashboard doesn't
A high EMQ score tells you the algorithm has a clear picture of who your buyers are. When someone books a waterproofing job or submits a painting quote request, Meta can match that conversion back to a real, identified user, then go find more people who look like them in a meaningful way, not just a demographic approximation.
A low EMQ score tells you the algorithm is flying partly blind. It's still spending your money. It's still generating events. It just doesn't know with confidence who those events belong to, so its lookalike modeling is built on weak data.
For a contractor, this translates into a practical test. Pull up your Events Manager. Find the conversion event your campaign is optimizing toward. Look at the Event Match Quality score next to it. If it's below five, that's the conversation to have with whoever is running your account. Ask them what identifiers are being passed. Ask whether the Conversions API is configured or whether the campaign is running on pixel alone. Ask when the score was last checked.

What a properly tracked campaign looks like in practice
Passing more identifiers back to Meta requires either a landing page (which gives the pixel access to browser data) or Conversions API configuration (which sends server-side data directly to Meta, bypassing browser-based limitations like ad blockers). Neither is complicated to set up, but both require someone to actually set them up, check them, and keep them running correctly.

What to do with this information
If you've had a campaign go stale without explanation, check the Events Manager before you conclude that Meta doesn't work for your trade. The EMQ score is the first diagnostic, not the last. A score below five on your primary conversion event is a fixable problem, but only if whoever is running your account knows it's a problem in the first place.
